“I thought he could do anything. I thought he would do something special in his lifetime and I wanted to help.” In contrapuntal fashion, the couple took turns describing family life which fully engaged their children and seven grandchildren in artistic activity, creativity, and adventure. Among their many travels, they took “four trips to French chalets” to share the excitement of foreign travel, and to “paint in the wine country.” These and other similar experiences led all four children to become artists. “Two, Lynn and Dick, are professionals, two are amateurs.” Hazen explains. “Jack does furniture, and Gwen does stained glass.” The Folse offspring live outside Illinois but the two daughters take turns to help their mother’s convalescence. Second daughter Lynn who lives in California is currently visiting and caring for their mother - since July rotating weekly with older sister Gwen. Affection, enthusiasm, and pride that flows between Hazen and daughter Lynn is evident. Equally apparent is Roland’s protectiveness towards Hazen. One can still hear the lilt in her voice that captured his attention. And her prediction that Roland could do anything and would accomplish something special in his life came true. But there are subtleties in life that can be easily overlooked. If anyone had predicted that Hazen Lewis Folse could do anything and accomplish something special in her life, that prediction would have come true as well. ~SSM~ Springfield Scene Magazine Tenth Anniversary Issue/Nov/Dec 2014 11
