The American Business Club (ABC) of Springfield, established in 1925, is more than a social club—it’s a cornerstone of community service and fellowship. Over the decades, ABC has championed charitable initiatives, focusing on improving the lives of physically and economically challenged individuals, particularly children.
The ABC Legacy Weekend
The ABC is celebrating its 100th year anniversary with a weekend full of activities. The details are well documented on their event website. They call this event, ABC100 Legacy Weekend. Scheduled for Thursday January 9th through Sunday January 12th, this weekend offers a variety of activities designed to honor the organization’s legacy and engage the community.
ABC100 Highlights:
- Online Historical Exhibition: ABC history web page showcases ABC’s journey over the years, featuring photographs, and stories that highlight its contributions to the community.
- January 9th – Centennial Contributions Luncheon: ABC members will honor grant requests from Local Non-Profit organizations. Twenty-six local causes will receive donations totalling more than $130,000.
- January 10th – Red Carpet History Reception: A 30 minute video will be the highlight of this reception for ABC Members and their guests. The video, produced locally by Storyteller Studios, will feature 4 members telling the story of ABC by sharing their stories of how ABC has impacted themselves and the community.
- January 11th – Gala Gala Dinner: A black-tie optional public affair held at the Exposition Building at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The celebration will feature a reception, catered dinner and a full-on rock show and dance party. Click here to purchase tickets to this grand affair.
Transformative Projects at the Illinois State Fair
The heart of ABC’s fundraising lies in its longstanding partnerships with the Illinois State Fair. Since 1954, the club has managed concessions in the Grandstand, and in 2004, it expanded its role to oversee gate admissions. These responsibilities demand nearly 30,000 volunteer hours annually, showcasing the dedication of ABC’s members and partner organizations.
The funds raised through these efforts are transformative. They enable the club to:
- Donate custom-designed Amtrykes to children and veterans with physical challenges.
- Award scholarships to students pursuing degrees in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and audiology.
- Support numerous local charities, such as the Boys and Girls Club of Central Illinois.
In its history, ABC has contributed more than $5 million in cash donations to community organizations serving Springfield.
Amtryke Program: Freedom on Three Wheels
One of ABC’s most beloved initiatives is the Amtryke program. These therapeutic tricycles provide individuals with physical or developmental challenges the joy and freedom of riding a bike. Offered free of charge, Amtrykes help children and veterans regain confidence, improve cardiovascular health, and share memorable moments with family and friends.
Legacy Fund: Building a Brighter Future
In addition to its annual charitable contributions, ABC’s Legacy Fund supports long-term community projects. This fund allows for significant investments, often spanning multiple years, to address pressing needs in the Springfield area. The recent commitment to the Boys and Girls Club of Central Illinois is a testament to ABC’s forward-thinking approach.
Scholarships for Tomorrow’s Therapists
ABC furthers its mission by providing scholarships to Central Illinois students pursuing careers in therapeutic fields. By investing in future physical, occupational, and speech therapists, the club ensures a lasting impact on the health and well-being of the community.
How You Can Get Involved
Whether through volunteering at the Illinois State Fair, applying for grants, or donating to the club’s initiatives, there are countless ways to support ABC’s mission. The opening of applications for charity grants are announced publicly each year, and scholarship applications are accepted annually from February 1 to May 1.
