Springfield Is Going Green
City, Water, Light and Power’s (CWLP) future for new electric power generation may in part be based on Solar Energy. Their first initiative for proof of concept is nearing completion on the west side of town adjacent to a transformer station located along the Sangamon Valley Trail next to the Harrison Park subdivision.
According to the spokesman on site from GRNE Solar, the panels will be ready to generate power and hook up to the electrical GRID by Thanksgiving. GRNE Solar bid on the RFP put out by CWLP and by City Council vote, won the bid. According to CWLP, they were the lowest cost bidder with the most experience on this size project.
With the assistance of local labor, the 250 KW solar array was built and completed by GRNE Solar within 10 business days even under some bad weather this past week. The next step is for CWLP to complete their work to hook up the power generated by the solar array to their electrical grid.
The pictures in this article were supplied by Travis Kepler, Design Engineer at GRNE Solar, who flew a drone around the array to give us a “bird’s eye” view of Springfield’s first solar array.
