SSHOF Friend of Sport Inductee Dave Kane with presenters Mayor Misty Buscher and SSHOF President Kevin O’Dea
A 1977 Southeast High School graduate and 1981 SIU-Carbondale alumnus, Dave Kane dedicated his career to covering and promoting local sports as an award-winning sportswriter for The State Journal-Register from 1983 to 2019. He became the beat reporter for smaller schools in 1991 and covered events like the LPGA State Farm Classic and Sangamon State University soccer, earning numerous accolades including induction into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2010.
Dave’s work was nationally recognized, winning the Copley Ring of Truth award in 1995 and taking top honors in several prestigious writing contests. Beyond journalism, he contributed to the local sports community as a co-host on The Press Box on WFMB-AM, a columnist for Channel 1450, and a media liaison for the Korn-Ferry golf tour. Dave’s legacy in sports journalism follows in the footsteps of his father, Pat Kane, who was inducted into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
