Leading the way in Memory Care through innovative technology, Concordia Village, a Lutheran Senior Services (LSS) Life Plan Community, is among the first in the region to offer Tovertafel.
Meaning “magic table” in Dutch, Tovertafel uses light projections onto a table to create an immersive and interactive experience where participants play games that engage their skills in a fun way. As more than 6,000 communities in 14 countries have adopted Tovertafel since its release in 2015, it has been proven to promote movement and stimulation for people living with dementia.
Using Tovertafel can break through restless and tense behavior, as well as increase positive emotions in people living with dementia. Games are created for a range of cognitive abilities, respond to even the slightest movement, and can be played individually or in a group. Playing together has been shown to promote social bonding between those living with dementia, care professionals, fellow residents, and family members.
Tovertafel has been a hit with the residents at Concordia Village. “They are having fun playing the games. They really get into it,” said Greta Huseman, Director of Community Enrichment for Concordia Village. She noted that Tovertafel also has a calming effect. “If a resident is anxious or stressed, the music and images are a wonderful distraction.”
Implementing Tovertafel underscores Concordia Village’s commitment to support people and their families on their journey with dementia.
