“Above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”

Roald Dahl

I chose this quote to begin my article because Chris Kattan was quick to point out each magical experience to me as they passed.

When we uncovered the fact that my birthday and his fathers birthday were the same (August 8th), it was exciting. But when we quickly realized we were standing on 8th street, visiting Lincoln’s home and the enormous painting of Lincoln addressing his constituents was dated 8/8, it was indeed strange. Something I never would have noticed if Chris had not pointed it out. He insisted it was cosmic and It was that moment that we decided we were destined to be friends.

For those unfamiliar, Chris Kattan is a comedic legend. Starting off at the Groundlings comedy Troupe in L.A., Kattan moved on to become one of Saturday Night Live’s brightest stars. Some of his characters included; Mr. Peepers and Mango. He went on to star in hit films including; Night at the Roxbury and Corky Romano. Currently he is touring the US with his stand up comedy routine and busy working on other films and sketches.

I learned a lot about Chris during our time together. Like the fact that he is an avid reader and collector of fine art. Most importantly in my book, Chris is a major dog lover too!

The best way I can describe interacting with Chris, is like feeling short of breath just being around him. Almost like he just absorbs all of the energy in the room until there is nothing left but the bellyaches you have from laughing too hard.

It’s not very often that you get the opportunity to interview your favorite comedian. The odds of a 10 minute interview evolving into a weekend full of laughs, are almost nil. He talked a lot about his family and his broken neck. His father Kip King was an original member of the foundlings and famous voice actor. The two had a very close bond until Kings death in 2010. As for Kattans unfortunate accident, he broke his neck while doing a skit on SNL. 5 surgeries later, he is still in some pain and engages in physical therapy and exercise.

As I finish up this story, my phone just buzzed notifying me of an awaiting text from Kattan. So I’ll end my story not with a closing remark but instead, “to be continued “…
